Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Questions and Answers
What is a Plastic Surgeon?
The term “plastic” comes from the Greek word “plastikos” meaning to mold or give form. Plastic Surgery does just that – it gives new form to the human body. The specialty includes two kinds of procedures – Reconstructive Surgery and cosmetic surgery.
A plastic surgeon’s education includes 4 years in medical school, full training in all aspects of general surgery (usually 5 years), and special fellowship training (at least 2 years) in plastic surgery. Both Dr. Barrientos and Dr. Potts have completed fellowship training in their area of expertise. Dr. Barrientos completed a Fellowship in Wound Care and an additional Pediatric Craniofacial Fellowship. He specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery as well as pediatric facial reconstruction. Dr. Potts completed an Orthopedic Hand Surgery Fellowship and he specializes in hand surgery and reconstruction. Slocum-Dickson Plastic Surgery Department provides comprehensive care for all plastic surgery patients in Central New York and beyond.
What is the difference between reconstructive plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery?
There are two different types of plastic surgery offered. There are reconstructive plastic surgery and cosmetic plastic surgery. Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed to restore functionality or make changes to appearance after injury, disease, congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, or trauma. Cosmetic plastic surgery is where a person chooses to have an operation to change their physical appearance for cosmetic reasons rather than medically necessary reasons. Cosmetic surgery can include botox, filler, facelifts, nose reshaping, fat suction, Brazilian butt lift, breast lift, and much more. If you are looking to have reconstructive or cosmetic surgery done, please contact one of our incredibly skilled physicians to schedule a consultation.
